This Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Lewes Elementary School parking lot, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be celebrating apples. The market will feature a special demonstration at 10 a.m. featuring Chef Dru Tevis, owner of Brûlé Bakery and national winner of the Food Network’s “Holiday Baking Championship,” along with Lenore Brady of Stag Run Farm. Brady will talk all about apples, and then Tevis will feature the recipe for his apple cobbler.

At this week’s market, 30 local farmers and producers will bring apples, apple cider, apple cider doughnuts, apple jams and jellies, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, lettuces, pumpkins, varieties of winter squashes, beans, potatoes, beets, radishes, turnips, napa cabbage, radicchio, arugula, kale, microgreens, Swiss chard, sweet and hot peppers, local salt, seasonal soups, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crabmeat, grass-fed chicken, beef, pork, mushrooms, honey, jams, freshly-laid eggs, coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, pastries made with fruit from market farmers, gluten-free offerings, cut-flower bouquets and more.

Customers can also pre-order fresh free-range Thanksgiving turkeys from Mahon River Farm, as well as holiday hams from Enoch Farms.

The entrance for walkers and bikers to the market is off Savannah Road. Parking is available in the school’s bus loop parking lot off Sussex Drive, with coned-off accessible parking spaces in the section closest to the market. Customers may also use the Fred Thomas Middle School parking lot. Beebe Healthcare also allows market customers to park in its outside parking lot, and there is parking available at George H.P. Smith Park, a short walk on the path to Lewes Elementary School.

The HLFM continues its Food Pantry Purchase Program. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community every Saturday may purchase local produce, meat, and other food directly from growers at the market to donate to this program, or through donations at the HLFM Information tent. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to food pantries including Epworth and Casa San Francisco.

The market accepts SNAP, WIC and SFMNP benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market also has a lineup of fall events. Saturday, Oct. 18, is Jazz Fest at the Market, where saxophonist Reggie Harris and his band will return to fill the Saturday Market with live jazz. On Saturday, Oct. 25, all marketgoers — including ghosts and witches — can get their flu vaccinations and health screenings, as the market welcomes the Beebe Healthcare team and celebrates Halloween.

It’s Customer Appreciation Day at the market on Saturday, Nov. 8, with customers to be offered a free brownie bite, apple cider and more. Visitors are being encouraged to bring donations, as well as make purchases at the market, on Nov. 15 and 22, for the HLFM Annual Food & Essentials Drive. Saturday, Nov. 22, is also the Thanksgiving Market, and then, after a Saturday off, Dec. 6 ends the season with a special Holiday Market.
